A PROMISE TO BE KEPT !
Why does not he care about me? This is my question. This is
what keeps me up at night. Why? Just why? Did I do something wrong? Yes! I made
a promise.
I look at the wall in my room, trying to forget and just go
to sleep. But I can't. It's hard to forget the reality. My mind starts to
wonder , what if I just go? Will he be satisfied? Probably not , until I found
his precious book which I lost.
Previous month, Jamal , my friend, and I went on a journey
to jungle which was two hour's drive from our homes. It was Jamal's idea to
visit that place as he was collecting species of plants to help him in his
world changing invention , to cure carcinogenic diseases. It was the project on
which he was working for many years and every detail of this was in his maroon
book.
Locals had already warned us about the potential dangers of that area. Deadly snakes is one of the
epitomes. In addition to this , they also warned us to be together at every
step of our journey as it's a hectic job
to find someone lost in that thick jungle.
As that journey progressed, something with sharp canines ;
black spots on his agile body paced towards me assuming me as its prey , bit
sharply on my leg. Dishoommm!!! The sound of the gunshot from Jamal's pistol
frightened that creature away.
We left that jungle immediately. But during all that chasing
the book of Jamal dropped from my hand and got lost near the river.
Today, I again revisited that jungle , without letting the second thoughts
to swift pass my mind , to fulfill the promise to find Jamal's book , worth a
fortune.
The dark gloomy jungle is even more eerie now. I had no idea
where the book was and the horrible thing called fear was setting in on
me. I hear the low howl of the wolf ,
and then several more join in. I turned around several time trying to navigate
my sense of direction. I played with my luck and began running through the dark
, eerie jungle wanting nothing but to find the book. All of sudden I'm falling
through chilly air. I plummet into the frigid depths of some water. I quickly ,
struggling against the frigid water, clutching
grip of what I know realize is a
river. I break the surface coming back into the chilly air and take a sharp
breath.
If I didn't get out the river I am going to die rather it be
from hypothermia or drowning . I scream before I go under the water due to the current. I manage to break the
surface again and set my mind to swim to the bank. I used my every ounce of my
energy to escape from the deathly river. I see what looks like a shore crawled
out of the river. I can barely feel anything and I was exhausted but I can't
sleep. I hear voices. I scream out trying to call out for help , but I realize
it's probably my imagination.
I woke up to a cold thing poking my face and then a loud
noise. I open my eyes and there was
Jamal. He wrapped me in a warm hug and whispered in my cold ear:"That book
isn't important than your life , my friend."
